Everything About Lizard Leather-Durability-Wear-Maintenance & Much More!

Hello, mate! Grab your Indiana Jones hat and a cheesy Australian accent, because today we’re going to be talking about lizards!

I’m not going to spend too much time selling this type of leather, because clearly these creatures are the closest thing we’ve got to real dinosaurs, and I think that’s all that really needs to be said. When you’re dealing with lizard skin, you’re going to have a wide canvas of wild and florid patterns and colors to choose between, and a leaping plethora exotic creatures, such as snakes and crocodiles, to make your base. You can’t deny this leather’s attraction. The bright blaze against slick scales catches the eye better than a leering snake, scaling over a proud, distinctive, and feral quality truly unique among leathers. That, and lizard skin is pretty darn tough.

Magic Scales

Lizard leather scales are remarkably water proof, and provide excellent protection from the elements. Pesky stains shan’t be nearly as much of a threat to lizard skin as to other leathers, although this shouldn’t be your cue to take it for granted. Those scales are rooted in place by a well lubricated membrane beneath them, which they are charged with protecting. Should that membrane dry up, the scales can pop off, which really doesn’t bode well for the aesthetics. Try not to take lizard leather out under excessive weather conditions, such as rain. If it does get wet, just blot up the moisture with a dry, clean cloth or paper towel. Blot, mind you, don’t wipe. Wipe smears, and blot absorbs – the latter is your friend. If the leather is lighter in hue, it may darken with excess water, so try to take care of it sooner rather than later. You can read more about how water affects leather in our blog “How Does Leather Breathe?

Speaking of water, it’s also going to be important to clean your lizard leather. For a regular spot clean, snag a soft, slightly damp cloth (only slightly, lest the water run off the scales and into the membrane), and wipe the scales until all visible dust is removed. When you do this, you will want to wipe in the direction the scales are flowing. If you aren’t sure how to verify this, a good trick is to run your finger softly across the leather in a straight line. If the skin feels rough, you’re running the wrong way. The skin should feel smooth to the touch as you slide your finger. If you spot dirt building up in the grooves, you can try to use a soft, bristled brush (an artist’s paintbrush is ideal) to get it out. Be very careful not to lift the scales. Once they come off, they will be unable to be returned to place.

Bubble Time

You may want to give your lizard skin a more thorough cleaning every so often, especially if it’s grown excessively dirt. Use a non-alcoholic, wax free leather cleaner designed for exotic reptile leather, and test it before you work it on. Gently sample a small amount in a discreet area of your leather with a white, lint-free cloth. Check the cloth for excess color rub off, discoloration in the lizard skin, or any other side effects. If none are present, you’re good to go. Apply your leather conditioner much the same way as you did with the spot clean – wipe gently in the direction of the scales, brush between them with a sable paintbrush, and absorb any residual moisture with a clean cloth afterwards. Let it dry in a cool, indoors area away from sunlight and direct heat. Sunlight and heat are harmful for lizard leather care, as they can dry out your leather fast and may shrink it. Reptiles are cold blooded, you’ll remember. Keep them in a cool room, and you’ll feel terribly clever about yourself. Those “inside” jokes are the best.

Thing about cleaning – once you have used a leather cleaner, it’s going to take away the lubricants that held your leather together. As a result, the leather’s pores have opened up to receive more oils, and if they don’t get them, they’re going to dry out. To this end, good lizard leather care dictates that a proper conditioning is in order. Depending on how much dirt it’s exposed to and how often you apply a leather cleaner, you probably won’t have to do this too much. If you clean and condition your lizard leather twice a year (condition your leather very soon after you clean it), you should be good most of the time. Play it by ear, and pay attention to your leather. If it shows signs that it’s drying up, bring out your conditioner, and remember to clean it first.

Spit and Polish

When you get ready to condition your lizard leather, make sure you are using a conditioner designed for exotic reptile leather. These conditioners possess a lighter composition and different viscosity than standard leather conditioners, and will be much healthier for your lizard. Try to make sure it’s wax and silicon free too – silicon has a tendency to dry leather out, and wax often has the effect of obscuring the iridescent quality that gives lizard leather its glimmer. Test your conditioner the same way you did your cleaner, and if it checks out, use a soft, clean cloth or brush to massage it in the direction of the scales, and let it dry for about fifteen minutes. Afterwards, buff the rest off – again in the direction of the scales – until any residue is gone. Stand back and admire the shine.

Note: Reptile leather is often laminated over a layer of cowhide. If this is present on your leather item, treat the cowhide as you would traditional leather (if you don’t know how to treat or identify your cowhide, click here for more information on that), but take care not to get any of your cowhide leather treatments on the lizard leather. If you are in an area with increased weather exposure, you may also want to apply a water and stain protector to your lizard leather while you’re at it. Go with something non-silicon, and spray works best. Make sure it’s meant for exotic reptile leather care, and test before using.

Lounging Lizards

Finally, to keep your lizard leather in good condition, try to store it in the aforementioned cool, clean, indoors location away from sunlight and direct heat. Inside of a breathable container works best, like a wooden box or a dust bag. Try not to put things on top of it to avoid stress, and keeping it in stuffed in newspapers or packing paper, which are more porous than leather, can help keep it strong.

That’s all the basics you’ll need to know about lizard leather care! Remember to take good care of your leather, and it may go on to outlive you! If these little buggers can thrive where the dinosaurs went extinct, imagine how legendary that leather wallet of yours can be. Even past death, they live on, their hide fending off the merciless elements and protecting your greens with ferocious, pointy scaled ferocity. For what they lack in size, these tiny dragons more than make up for in gut. Give’em a chance, and they’ll show you what a real survivor looks like.

 LEATHER BREAK-IN/FIT

MTR Custom Leather holsters/leather products are manufactured from only the premium materials and our technique molding is very accurate to specific firearms. When you receive your leather product from MTR it may appear to fit close-fitting at first, but this by design. MTR engineer our product to fit snug knowing that the leather filaments will relax and give to the proper fit with use.

UNLOAD YOUR FIREARM before testing holster fit.

If the holster/magazine has tension screws: Since the tension components are not pre-set at the factory, you may need to adjust them to the holster your firearm or magazine the first time. We recommend that you check your tension screw adjustment before each use. There is no reason to completely remove the tension components. Do not use Loctite or any other form of Loctite on the tension components. Nevertheless, you can apply a single drop of clear nail polish to your tension screw threads, this may reduce loosening.

If the fit is too tight when holstering your firearm/magazine the first time, than don’t force it. If you do force the firearm/magazine into the leather, it may be very difficult to draw/remove. Instead, please follow these 6 simple steps to break in your new leather.

  1. Place the UNLOADED firearm or magazine in a plastic freezer bag, or 2-3 layers of clear plastic wrap. Do NOT cover the grip.
  2. Insert the bagged/wrapped firearm/magazine gradually into the leather, lightly twisting it side to side to minimize tearing of the bag/wrap.
  3. Once the firearm/magazine is completely seated in the leather, twist it about 1/16” in both directions 7-13 times.
  4. Allow the bagged/wrapped forearm/magazine to sit in the leather for about 16 minutes.
  5. Remove the firearm/magazine from the leather and remove the bag/wrap from the firearm/magazine.
  6. Insert the UNLOADED firearm or magazine into the leather, which should be snug but not loose. If it is still too tight, repeat the above steps until the leather is broken into your satisfaction.

If your Holster has a thumb break/ retention strap: You may need to stretch the retention strap before you get it to snap. With your fingers only (no tools, water, chemicals, or etc.). You may need to break in the holster first by using the 6 simple steps above.

  1. Place your UNLOADED firearm in the holster.
  2. Hold the firearm grip in your dominant hand and the thumb break strap/retention strap in the opposite hand.
  3. Prepare the strap for stretching by grasping the snap and pulling the strap firm (remove the slack).
  4. Twist the strap about 90 degrees back and forth in a clockwise and counterclockwise rotation about 10-15 times while keeping it firm.
  5. Firmly push the firearm away from you while pulling on the strap and continue rotating the strap.
  6. Release the tension for a moment and repeat 3-4 times as needed.
  7. Pull the strap over the back of the firearm without releasing tension.
  8. While maintaining the strong tension attempt to snap the retention strap closed.
  9. Repeat step 5 and 6 as needed.

Following and repeating the above instructions is the only way to an ideal break –in and long service life and proper fit that will last many years.

It is common for the inside of the leather to scratch from a single holstering, that is known as etching. A smooth leather lined holster will be even more subject to this normal occurrence. After this initial etching, the holster will custom fit your firearm.

When testing out MTR Custom Leather products for proper fitment, never place a loaded firearm in a holster without first testing.

Should any MTR product become worn, loose, broken, defective or ill-fitting, or in your opinion is unsafe, cease use immediately.

Maintenance of Leather

We use bull hide leather and horse hide leather. These hides are made from natural steer hides that are range bred and grown. Thus, there may be natural range markings in the grain of the leather. This is normal for top grain bull hide and horse hide leather. This adds to the beauty and character of your MTR products.

Following the instructions below will add to the service life of your MTR product.

Leather that encounters your skin or cloths will also encounter bodily perspiration (oils, sweat and etc.). Think of the leather as your skin being dried while being outside or dirty when in the woods hurting. The leather may become dirty on a regular basis and may need to be cleaned or treated periodically to slow the natural breakdown of the leather fibers.

Steps for Carnauba Wax:

  1. Make sure your leather is dry (do not dry the leather with any artificial heat)
  2. Take MTR Custom Leather Carnauba Wax and shake well to avoid bubbles
  3. Apply the Carnauba wax with a soft cloth
  4. Allow the leather to dry naturally
  5. Take Sheep wool and buff the leather to a high gloss
  6. Application can be repeated

Carnauba Wax Benefits:

  1. Deep luster and shine
  2. Proven technology
  3. Naturally derived
  4. Resist fingerprints
  5. Resist scruff marks
  6. High gloss and shine

Carnauba is a thick base cream.

Steps for Atom Wax:

  1. Make sure the leather is dry (do not dry the leather with any artificial heat)
  2. Remove any surface dirt by using a piece of rubber foam (nothing hard, may damage leather fibers)
  3. Take the MTR Custom Leather Atom Wax and shake well to avoid bubbles
  4. Apply Atom Wax sparingly can use a dapper or soft cloth
  5. Work evenly into the leather
  6. Let dry
  7. Polish briskly with soft cloth for a natural finish

Atom Wax Benefits:

  1. Naturally derived
  2. Cleans the leather from dirt, debris, bodily fluids, etc.
  3. Penetrates deep into the leather fibers
  4. Easy to Buff
  5. Proven technology

Atom Wax is a watery base liquid.

Do not submerge or saturate your leather product in the waxes. Do not use any other kinds of oils on our leather product. Other oils may soften the leather too much.

CAUTION with carnauba and atom wax! Keep away from heat, flame, or sparks. If swallowed, call a physician immediately. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.

Leather Paddle Holsters-What are they-how do you wear them?

March 30, 2023 by MTR Custom Leather in Uncategorized with No Comments

We get to talk to customers most all day about holsters, and one of the holster styles that seems most confusing to people is the paddle holster.

The paddle holster gets its name from the paddle-shaped appendage that is attached to the holster. That appendage is worn inside the waistband, while the paddle holster is worn outside the belt. We understand that the paddle holster concept can be a little confusing, so here are a few images to help explain:

So What is a Paddle Holster?

From an official definition or description standpoint, Wikipedia describes a paddle holster as:

“A paddle holster is a holster for a handgun whose method of securing the holster to the wearer utilizes a flat, concave shaped piece of plastic or stiffened leather designed to be worn against the body inside of the pants.”

For the most part, a paddle holster consists of two components:

  • The holster
  • The paddle

Let’s talk about each part separately:

Holster

The holster portion of paddle holsters is typically manufactured from one of three materials:

  • Leather – Our personal favorite and still one of the most popular gun holster materials.
  • Kydex – This thermoplastic material has become very popular as a gun holster material in the last 20 years. It’s an extremely durable material that is entirely waterproof but is vulnerable to high heat.
  • Ballistic Nylon – This durable material is known for being extremely strong with high tensile strength. It’s less expensive to produce but doesn’t hold its form all that well.

Paddle

The paddles themselves can be produced from several materials. But the two most popular options are Kydex paddles or plastic paddles that are covered in leather or suede for additional comfort.

Most paddles are designed with a series of built-in appendages commonly called lips, ledges, or anchors. These appendages are designed to increase the amount of friction holding the holster to the body and serve as a grabbing or gripping point for the underside of a belt (if one is worn) to aid in stability and retention.

Paddle Holster – Pros and Cons

Like most things in life, paddle holsters offer some advantages and disadvantages. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of this holster style:

Pros

Easy to putting on or taking off – With the paddle portion being worn inside the waistband, the paddle holster is relatively easy to put on or take off. The user doesn’t have to remove the belt or even undo the pants in most cases, and that’s the most significant advantage that a paddle holster offers. That feature is what makes the paddle holster such a popular holster option.

Can potentially be worn without a belt – While many other holster styles are dependent on a belt to function, the paddle holster is the only outside the waistband holster style that is NOT dependent on a belt.

This feature makes the paddle holster a popular option with the ladies (as many do not utilize a belt in most everyday wear) and with clothing styles that are not belt friendly (think sweat pants, yoga pants, etc.). Now for the holster to be stable in these scenarios, the pants must have a reasonably firm waistband that rides tight to the body; otherwise, the holster will shift around and pull away from the body.

Cons

Not as stable as a belt holster – The paddle holster’s easy-on/easy-off features are a bit of a double-edged sword as they also mean that the paddle holster relies on the friction of the paddle inside the waist as an anchor point to keep the holster in place. This attachment method is not as stable as attaching the holster directly to the belt and can mean that the holster may shift on the waist.

Lacks the physical security of a belt holster – Most paddle holsters use a ledge, lip, or clip of some design to help with friction. To help grab onto the bottom of the belt, the holster itself isn’t physically attached to the belt like a traditional belt holster. As such, the paddle holster lacks the same physical security found on a belt holster with the gun belt attached through belt slots in the holster.

Concealability – While the paddle design offers an easier way to put the holster on or take it off compared to the traditional belt loop method, it doesn’t pull the holster as tight to the body as a belt holster. With the holster riding a little farther away from the body, paddle holsters can be more challenging to conceal compared to a traditional OWB belt holster.

Paddle Holster Options

Like most gun holster models, paddle holsters are available with various options or features that can be beneficial to the user. Some of the more popular options include the following:

Holster cant – The “cant” refers to the angle that the holster rides on the waist in relation to the user. The two most popular cants are commonly called straight-up cant or zero cant, and a forward cant. The forward cant angle varies with each holster brand, but most angle a forward cant model somewhere between 10 degrees and 15 degrees.

Some paddle holster models feature an adjustable cant that is adjusted to a 0 cant (straight up and down), forward cant, or even a 15-degree reverse cant for those that might want to wear the holster in a cross draw configuration.

Retention devices – While many paddle holster models are designed as open-top models with just passive retention, some are available with active retention devices.

Passive retention refers to the retention provided by the fit of the weapon into the holster, while active retention refers to a retention device that has to be activated or accessed for the handgun to be drawn from the holster.

The two most common types are:

  • Thumb Break – A thumb break (also commonly called a retention strap, security strap, or retention break) is used to describe a strap device or hood device that goes over the handgun’s rear portion and is designed to help keep the firearm in the holster. The strap or hood has to be unsnapped, disengaged, or moved forward for the handgun to be drawn in most cases.
  • Internal lock – Paddle holster models with an internal lock are designed with a locking mechanism that attaches to the handgun’s front trigger guard area within the holster. This lock has to be deactivated via a button or other mechanism to draw the handgun.

From a security level standpoint most commonly seen at the law enforcement level, these types of retention devices are usually assigned a numerical level. A holster with a single retention device is widely known as a Level 1 holster. A Level 2 holster would have two retention devices, while a Level 3 holster would have three retention devices.

Most paddle holsters only offer a maximum of Level 1 retention on the standard LEO retention scale. However, a few specialized paddle holster designs on the market are classified as Level 2.

Ride Height – Some paddle holster models on the market also offer an adjustable ride height. The user can adjust where the paddle attaches to the holster and control the height that the holster rides in relation to their belt or waistline.

FAQS

Here are some commonly asked questions that we see regarding paddle holsters:

Do you offer a paddle style holster to fit any pistols with lights mounted?

Yes, we carry the MTR Custom paddle holster, which is available to fit over 100 different handgun models with many popular weapon light models attached. That paddle holster model can be seen here.

I’m looking for a leather paddle type holster that uses a push-button style security release similar to the security lock on the Blackhawk Serpa holster?

Unfortunately, we don’t currently offer a leather paddle holster that features an internal lock or push button security release. All the paddle holsters that we offer use a thumb break as the retention device.

Do you have a paddle style holster model that features an adjustable cant?

We currently offer two holster brands that produce a paddle holster: Don Hume and MTR Custom. Of the two, only the MTR Custom model offers an adjustable cant. The cant on that model can be set up for straight-up cant, forward cant, or reverse forward cant for cross-draw carry. That model can be seen by following this link.

Do you have any leather paddle holster models?

At this time, we only offer holsters in leather, so all we have are leather paddle holster options.

Are paddle holsters any good?

The concept of something being either good or bad is based strictly on one’s opinion of what is good or bad. As that opinion is entirely subjective, the “good” or “bad” rating is relative.

Paddle holsters certainly have their place and fill a definite niche within the holster industry. Paddle holsters are quite popular due to their ease of being put on or taken off compared to a traditional belt holster, where you have to remove your belt to mount the belt holster.

Personally, we’ve always felt that paddle holsters were a good option for range use, general carry, or any situation where one has to take the holster on or off regularly.

Can you talk about how to wear a paddle style holster?

While a paddle holster may look complicated, they are relatively easy to wear. Most paddle holsters are designed to wear on the strongside (as in the same side as your shooting hand). The holster’s paddle portion is inserted down into the waistband and then slightly adjusted to the specific point where it rides comfortably. The actual holster portion then rides outside the waistband on the point where the paddle was inserted.

Are holsters with a paddle good for concealed carry?

Opinions on this topic are no different than opinions on any other gun-related topic. Ask ten different shooters, and you’ll most likely get ten varied answers.

Our opinion on this topic has been that paddle holsters can be a good option for concealed carry, but only under the right circumstances.

Due to their design, paddle holsters don’t ride as close to the body as a belt holster. As a result, paddle holsters don’t conceal all that well, and they are best suited for concealed carry use in colder climates where a cover garment can use used. In warmer weather, they do not conceal well with a light cover garment like a T-shirt.

However, for use with a sweatshirt, light jacket, or coat as a cover garment, they can work well for concealed carry.

The Best Concealment Carry Bag- Flexible- Transitional-Backpack-Fannypack-Versatile-Any Gender

MTR Custom Leather offers the best and most flexible concealed carry bag!

Just listen to our customers:
The Ukoala Yukon brings a functional off-body solution to day hikers and urbanites in need of a concealed carry holster setup. (Photo: Jacki Billings/Guns.com)
For adventurers who don’t want to trek miles into the woods but enjoy smaller, minimalist-style day trips into the wilderness, carrying a gun can sometimes prove challenging as day hikers often must turn to alternatives in order to successful pack a gun. Ukoala, a holster maker with an unconventional approach to concealed carry, has just the option for minimalistic hikers and even urbanites searching for a more discreet mode of off-body carry.
WHAT IS UKOALA?
Ukoala, pronounced you-koala, brings an innovative approach to the concealed carry conundrum, offering an off-body carry mode… of sorts. A compact bag meets thigh rig, the Ukoala hooks around the hips of the carriers as well as the thigh, securing to the wearer. The bag features a compartment specifically meant for firearms with Velcro lining allowing a MTR Custom Leather holster to rest inside. The firearm slips into the holster, riding securely.
The bag also benefits from converting from a thigh style into normal bag. Slipping around the body, cross-body style, this option opens the door for gun owners not keen on the thigh rig setup. In addition to a firearm pocket, the Ukoala offers multiple pockets for storing other accessories and necessities like a wallet, keys, spare mags and a tourniquet.
The bag itself comes in different styles and colors, giving concealed carriers plenty of options when it comes to the “look” of the Ukoala. The bags also come in standard sizing or compact, depending on how much room you need to stow carry guns and gear. The standard measures 10-inches by 12-inches while the compact comes in at 9-inches by 11-inches. For this review I checked out the Yukon style.
CARRYING WITH UKOALA
I’ll admit, I didn’t quite know what to make of the Ukoala when I first encountered the brand. Suffering from what sounded like an identity crisis, the Ukoala blends off-body with on-body using a bag-like design that attaches to wearers. Realistically, how well would this wannabe thigh rig work in real life?
Surprisingly, well, as I found out. As usual, I paired the Ukoala with my Glock 19 – a hefty midsize gun that isn’t always the easiest to conceal due to its larger size.

The leg strap extends from 10-22″ and fits a thigh up to 33″. The standard waist belt extends from 18-47″, and the extension piece 12-19″. When an extension piece is added to a waist belt, it will fit waist sizes to 66″. If you need a shorter length, cut the strap shorter and sew the end to prevent unraveling.  Another option is to work with a seamstress or shoe shop to fit the length to meet your needs.

At Urban Utility Bags, our mission is simple. With function and quality as our brand anchors, we promise to remain driven to produce unique, useful, fashionable utility products that make your life easier and more enjoyable.

The vision and creativity of founder  Yan Ma (or Mayan, as we call her) got the company to where it is today. She made the very first Ukoala bag as a hobby, combining aesthetics and functionality, and soon discovered an untapped market demand for her unique, hands-free design. Using her civil engineering degree and designer background, she partnered with a small manufacturing company in 2013 and started her own company. As her designer line of bags grew to include vegan products, cosplay bags, and fanny packs, she saw the need for a broader company and formed UUB, LLC(formerly The Ukoala Bag),UUB/The Original Ukoala separates itself from the others in very unique ways. Every aspect of the bags is designed with functionality, fit & comfort in mind and are all hand-produced. From the material of the bags to the solid hardware and hand stitching, the quality of the bag is second to none.

Each bag can transition easily from cross-body, to a backpack or as a hip bag. When worn as a hip bag, which is the most popular way, the engineering aspects of the bag allow the weight to be evenly distributed around the hips/waist area. This provides for a hands-free, weightless feel. Whether traveling, horseback or motorcycle riding, or attending Con shows, the Ukoala /UUB bag is revered by all of its loyal customers.

Ukoala. It’s an experience!

Our sales and marketing efforts are shared by Yan Ma, Kim, and rotating volunteers. These ladies help expand the UUB footprint by building and managing our wholesale distribution pipeline and representing the brand at trade show events.

Kim, our customer service manager, has been assisting Yan Ma since 2013, and is an integral part of the company’s success. Some of the many tasks that Kim shoulders are inventory management, order fulfilment, repair and return facilitation, responding to customer phone calls and inquiries, and maintaining a portfolio of wholesale clients.

Our volunteers manage the financial aspect of the business, including budget development, cash flow analysis, corporate policy development, assisting with the wholesale pipeline management, and ensuring operational efficiencies.
